Am sure a lot of people are familiar with the story and movie called 300. A story of how King Leonidas and a force of 300 men fight the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C. The 300 fought bravely for three days and were praised for their courage and bravery although they were killed.
In today’s passage, Gideon gathered the people in preparation for war. He initially had thirty two thousand men, but God told him the number was too much lest Israel thought it was by their numbers they defeated their enemies.
The first stage of pruning the army was asking anybody fearful to leave, twenty two thousand people left. However the Lord said the ten thousand remaining were still too much and further pruning was needed. The next test was at the waters, everyone that lapped with his tongue was qualified while those who bowed down upon their knees to drink were discharged. Only three hundred passed this test and the three hundred were enough for God for the battle ahead.
In the night God gave Gideon a last proof of His presence with them, and an assurance of the victory ahead. He overheared the dream of an enemy army and its interpretation. Even the enemies knew already that Gideon would defeat them in battle. This experience gave Gideon all the confidence and boldness he could ever need. He went back to the camp, and gave war instructions to his men.
The Lord gave victory to Israel that day, turning the host of the enemies against each other. God proved that he could save with few or with many, He is the mighty man in battle. Though the 300 of the historical Leonidas did not win, the 300 of God did and not a single man was killed!
Some verses to remember
Vs 2: And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
Vs 17 : And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
Vs 22: And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.
