1 Sam 15:1-35
Samuel returned to Saul again today to deliver the word and commandment of God to him. Saul was to go and destroy the Amalekites and everything they owned, nothing was to be spared, because of the way the Amalekites treated Isarel when they left Egypt.
In truth Saul went to Amalek and destroyed the people there, he however spared the king, capturing him, and also brought back the best animals (sheep, cow, fatling etc) all spared by his men. This was in stark disobedience to the command he had to destroy everything and spare nothing.
God told Samuel of this disobedience, saying it repents him that he had made Saul king for he has turned from following God by not obeying his commandments. With God half obedience is disobedience. Samuel was grieved by this and cried unto the Lord all night.
When he went to Saul the following morning, Saul was quick to say he had obeyed the Lord’s commandment, but when Samuel asked him about the bleating animals, he answered that the people spared the best to sacrifice unto the Lord. God does not take delight in Sacrifice and burnt offerings as much as he does obeying his voice. “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than fat of rams”. With God, rebellion and stubbornness rank as high as witchcraft and idolatry.
Saul had disobeyed God, and much worse, he was not even aware and was trying to defend his position, and more keen about his own honour as shown in his persistence that Samuel should come with him to the sacrifice to honour him before the elders of the people. Samuel left that day telling Saul that the kingdom had been torn away from him. Though he attended the sacrifice and killed Agag, he never saw Saul again with any message from God.
What has God told you to do? Are you rationalizing and being stubborn? The Spirit of God could cease to strife with you and leave you to your witchcraft and idolatry. Change before it is too late.
Some verses to remember
Vs 22-23: And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
