David shows kindness to Mephibosheth

2 Sam 9:1-13

Today, David made good one of the promises he made to Jonathan his dear friend, and even to Saul. He asked the question, “Is there any left of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him, for Jonathan’s sake? The answer came in the form of Mephibosheth – Jonathan’s son – who had been lame since a young age.

When Mephibosheth came to David, he bowed down, but David told him not to fear as he would restore to him the lands of Saul, and also allow Mephibosheth to dine from his David all the days of  his life. He literally gave Mephibosheth access. He also told Ziba that he would serve Mephiboseth, along with his sons. So, Mephiboseth dwelt in Jerusalem and did eat from David’s table.

How do you treat your friends and the promises you made to them, how even so your enemies? David was faithful to Jonathan, and also did not remember the hatred of Saul against him, but was kind to their family. Love your enemies and do good to those who spitefully use you.

Some verses to remember

vs 3:  And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.

vs 7: And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.
