2 Kgs 10:1-36
In one of the greatest single throne related massacre ever, Jehu executed judgement on Ahab‘s family. We learnt that Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria who were being brought up by various leaders in the land. Jehu sent messages to these leaders to see if any of them wanted to make those sons king in Israel or support him. They were all afraid of the main who slew two kings in a single day, and they rather chose to be on his side.
So, Jehu gave command to these leaders to meet him in Jezreel with the heads of the king’s sons. All these rulers and great men cut off the heads of Ahab’s seventy sons and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel.Jehu indeed was fulfilling what Elijah had prophesied about the house of Ahab. he also slew all of Ahab’s great men, kinsmen and priests, until he left none remaining.
Aside this, Jehu also devised a plot to destroy all of Baal worshippers in the land. He told the people that Ahab served Baal a little, but he would serve Baal much. So he asked that all the prophets and priests of Baal together with all its followers should gather, for him to make a great sacrifice to Baal. After ensuring that no single Baal worshipper was left out at the sacrifice, he gave command after he had offered the sacrifice that they all be slain, with none remaining. All the images were also broken down and burned, and Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.
All these seemed so great until we got to read that Jehu himself did not depart from the sin of Jeroboam, who placed the golden calves in Bethel and Dan. God however still promised Jehu that his children, till the fourth generation, would occupy the throne due to the judgement he executed on the house of Ahab. However Israel was cut short as they lose ground to Hazael, king of Syria.
Jehu eventually died after reigning for twenty eight years, and Jehoahaz his son became king in his place.
Some verses to remember
vs 10-11: Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the LORD, which the LORD spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the LORD hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah. So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
vs 25: And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.
vs 31-32: But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin. In those days the LORD began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel.
