2 Kgs 11:1-21
After the death of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Athaliah, his mother decided to slay all the seed royals and decided to reign over the land herself. This was an attempt to usurp God‘s promise to David that his seed would continue to be on the throne. However, even in the darkest hours, God still has and makes ways. Jehosheba, who was Ahaziah’s sister, and Jehoiada the priest, were both instrumental in preserving the life of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, as they hid him away from Athaliah.
When Joash became seven, Jehoiada sent for the rulers and the captains over the people, and he revealed the true heir to the throne to them. He also gave them instructions to protect the young king. So, all the people gathered as Jehoiada brought out the crown and anointed Joash king of Judah.
When Athaliah heard the noise and came to the temple, she saw Joash being crowned king, and shouted, “Treason, Treason”! How so easy it is to spot even the wrongs we do in others but we are so blind to our own faults. At Jehoiada’s command, they chased down Athaliah and she was slain.
So Joash became king at seven years old. Together with all the people a renewed committed was made to God, as the idols and altars of Baal were destroyed, and its priest slain. All the people rejoiced as evil was being destroyed in the land and righteousness established.
Righteousness exalts every land, even today, but sin will always be a reproach. Let us all work together for righteousness in our communities. Be blessed!
Some verses to remember
vs 12: And he brought forth the king’s son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.
vs 17: And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and the people, that they should be the LORD’S people; between the king also and the people.
